BARF Tips & Tricks: Supplements
"For the best source of natural calcium, I make my own egg shell powder. I save my egg shells in the freezer until I have the time to grind. Once removed from the freezer, I let them dry completely (almost 24 hours). I have a separate "coffee bean" grinder just for my shells and herbs. Once grinded to powder, I place in a labeled tupperware container and use as needed. Believe me, a little goes a long way! I also have many of my neighbors saving their egg shells for me too...I'll soon be an egg shell powder supplier! lol"
"To get better prices on many supplements, try purchasing from a discount horse supply catalog. Jeffer's (1-800-JEFFERS), and Valley Vet Supply (1-800-356-1005). You can get kelp powder (called SOURCE), Vitamin C and E, joint and arthritis support supplements plus topicals and bandages at better prices."
"When purchasing supplements, gel tabs are the best...I'm even willing to pay a dollar or two more for them because of their convenience. I keep a large safety pin on my kitchen window sill and all I have to do is pop a tiny hole in the gel tab and drizzle over the food...DONE!!! This sure beats breaking and hammering tablets, that end up all over the place."
"I've found that if one of my dogs needs extra Vitamin C, I give them a chewable tablet...it's like giving candy to a child, and they get the C they need."
"Instead of using a pin to open up the gel caps I use a map tack or push pin. Gives you something to hold on to to puncture the gel tab."
"I use a small mortar and pestle for grinding up supplements that come in pill form (like vitamin c or MSM Glucosamine). It's fast and the pieces don't spray all over the kitchen."
